Azule Energy hits gas in landmark Angola exploration effort

Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP and Eni, announced a significant gas discovery off Angola’s shores. The Gajajeira-01 well, drilled in block 1/14 of the Lower Congo Basin, encountered abundant gas and condensate-bearing rock.

Preliminary estimates suggest the gas volume could exceed one trillion cubic feet, with up to 100 million barrels of condensate. “This is a landmark moment for gas exploration in Angola,” said Adriano Mongini, Azule Energy’s CEO, in a joint statement.

He noted the well’s success boosts confidence in the untapped potential of the Lower Congo Basin’s resources. The Gajajeira-01 is Angola’s first dedicated gas exploration well, marking a milestone in the country’s energy sector.

Block 1/14 is operated by Azule Energy, which holds a 35% stake alongside Equinor (30%), Sonangol E&P (25%), and Acrep S.A. (10%). This discovery could reshape Angola’s position in the regional gas market, highlighting growing opportunities in offshore exploration.

Azule Energy’s breakthrough underscores the expanding role of natural gas in Africa’s evolving energy landscape. The partners now plan further exploration and development to fully assess the reservoir’s commercial viability.
