Congo government halts state-financed travel

The government of Congo-Brazzaville has announced a temporary suspension of state-financed travel for ministers and officials until the end of the year.

The decision aims to reduce government spending amidst financial difficulties.

Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso issued a circular detailing the travel ban, which applies to all government members, senior officials, and other state agents.

The only exception is for missions involving the president of the republic.

The government encourages officials to participate in video conferences instead of traveling.

A government source explained that the measure is intended to alleviate cash flow tensions and address the economic challenges facing the country.

Congo-Brazzaville, a small oil-producing nation, has been struggling with economic hardships.

Approximately half of the population lives below the poverty line, and recent strikes by refuse collectors and power outages have further highlighted the country’s difficulties.

The government has revised its budget downwards for 2024, reflecting the economic pressures.

The suspension of government travel is one of the measures being implemented to address these challenges.
