Copper prices continue to rise

Copper prices have increased for several weeks.

During the week of September 7–12, copper traded at $14,461.25 per tonne.

A week earlier, the price stood at $14,350.20. Therefore, copper recorded a weekly increase of 0.77%.

Prices also increased in late August.

Copper traded at $14,437.50 per tonne during the week of August 24–29. That was up from $14,356.20 the previous week.

Copper is important for the DRC

The DRC copper price trend is important for the country’s mining sector.

Copper is one of the DRC’s main mineral exports. It is also widely used around the world.

For example, copper is important for electrical equipment and construction. Demand for the metal is also linked to growing electrification.

Meanwhile, the DRC is Africa’s largest copper producer.

The country produced about 2.8 million tonnes of copper in 2023, according to figures cited by Africanews.

That made the DRC the world’s second-largest copper producer that year.

As a result, changes in international copper prices are closely watched in the DRC.

Higher prices can affect the value of the country’s mineral exports. However, prices can also rise or fall as conditions in global commodity markets change.
