Egypt raises fuel prices for the first time in 2025

Egypt has increased fuel prices for the first time in 2025, local media outlets reported on Friday.

The hikes, reaching nearly 15%, are part of the government’s efforts to decrease fuel subsidies.

This move aligns with the requirements of the International Monetary Fund’s $8 billion support package.

The price increases, ranging from 11.76% to 14.81% across various fuel products, follow the IMF’s recent approval of a $1.2 billion disbursement to Egypt.

The disbursement came after the completion of the fourth review of their loan program established last year. Egypt has secured consecutive financing agreements with the IMF since 2016.

The IMF has consistently urged Egypt to reduce subsidies on fuel, electricity, and food while simultaneously expanding social safety nets for its citizens.

In March, the fund stated Egypt’s commitment to achieving cost recovery in energy subsidies by December.

This action aims to address the nation’s significant current account deficit.

Diesel fuel, a widely used commodity, saw an increase of 2 Egyptian pounds ($0.0390) per litre, rising from 13.50 to 15.50 pounds.

Gasoline prices also experienced substantial increases, with 80 octane rising to 15.75 pounds, 92 octane to 17.25 pounds, and 95 octane reaching 19 pounds, according to local reports.
