Ethiopia ranks among Africa’s most dynamic economies: envoy

Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai has described Ethiopia as one of Africa’s most economically dynamic countries, highlighting its efforts to attract foreign investment and diversify exports.

Speaking at an “Export to China” session in Addis Ababa, Chen said China remains Ethiopia’s largest trading partner and a major source of investment.

He said Beijing has expanded market access for Ethiopian products through zero-tariff treatment and other measures aimed at lowering export costs.

According to Chen, the policies could help small and medium-sized Ethiopian businesses reach Chinese consumers and attract investment into competitive industries.

He said China also wants to improve the global competitiveness of Ethiopian products while supporting the country’s agricultural modernisation and industrial development.

Chen highlighted growing economic cooperation between the two countries, including China’s support for Ethiopia’s accession to BRICS.

He also said China had completed bilateral negotiations on Ethiopia’s World Trade Organization accession, a move that could further integrate the country into global markets.

China launched its “Sharing the Big Market” and “Exporting to China” initiatives last year to encourage imports and expand access to its consumer market.

Chen said the Addis Ababa session reflected China’s confidence in Ethiopia’s economic potential and the future of bilateral trade.

He reaffirmed Beijing’s readiness to deepen policy and industrial cooperation while strengthening supply-chain links between the two economies.
