First Quantum halts operations at Zambia mine after fatal accident

Canadian mining firm First Quantum Minerals has temporarily suspended work at its Kansanshi copper mine in Zambia following a fatal accident on site. The company is investigating the incident, which involved a tracked dozer and a light vehicle, resulting in the death of an employee.

First Quantum said in a statement that the accident site has been secured, and operations in that area will remain halted until it is confirmed safe to resume.

The Kansanshi mine, which produced over 134,000 tonnes of copper and nearly 69,000 ounces of gold last year, has experienced previous safety incidents. Last November, two contractors working at First Quantum’s Zambian sites, including Kansanshi, died in separate accidents.
