France supports swift resolution for Ethiopia’s debt

French President Emmanuel Macron pledged full support for Ethiopia’s ongoing debt restructuring efforts during his visit to the capital. Macron emphasized the urgency of resolving the matter swiftly, stating it should be finalized “in the coming weeks.”

The French president made this statement following a successful agreement between Ethiopia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in November. The agreement pertains to the second review of a $3.4 billion financing program. Macron expressed confidence in the country’s reform efforts, noting that they were key to advancing the restructuring.

“We aim to complete the restructuring of this 3 billion-euro debt in the next few weeks,” Macron said. The French leader made these remarks during a joint press conference with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Macron also reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s discussions with the IMF, emphasizing an important meeting slated for mid-January. This meeting could play a pivotal role in resolving the nation’s financial challenges.

The visit marks Macron’s continued diplomatic engagement with African countries. His backing signals France’s strong support for Ethiopia as it navigates complex financial reforms.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed the French president’s remarks, underscoring Ethiopia’s commitment to maintaining its reform trajectory. As the country works to stabilize its economy, the international community continues to closely monitor its progress.

Ethiopia’s efforts to address its debt challenges have gained significant global attention, with Macron’s support seen as a crucial step toward a resolution.
