India has dispatched a wave of humanitarian aid to Mozambique, where floods have battered central and southern provinces this month.
The External Affairs Ministry announced the shipment in a social media post late Tuesday, describing it as part of India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief programme.
An Indian Navy ship carried 500 metric tonnes of rice as immediate food assistance for displaced communities.
The vessel also transported 10 metric tonnes of essential relief supplies, including tents and hygiene kits.
Rehabilitation support items and three tonnes of critical medicines were included in that consignment, the ministry said.
Separately, 86 metric tonnes of life-saving medicines have already reached Mozambique by sea, arriving ahead of the latest shipment.
The floodwaters have strained hospitals, displaced families and disrupted access to clean water across the affected regions.
Against that backdrop, New Delhi has positioned itself as a rapid and reliable source of relief.
The ministry reaffirmed India’s commitment to sustained support, spanning humanitarian, medical and logistical assistance for Mozambique.
Officials described India as a trusted first responder within the Indian Ocean Region and across the African continent.
The gesture reflects New Delhi’s broader strategy of deepening ties with African nations through disaster diplomacy.
Naval deployments for relief missions have become a recurring feature of India’s outreach during regional emergencies.
For Mozambique, the immediate priority remains distributing food and medicine to communities cut off by rising waters.
