Mali’s military-led government has arrested four employees of Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold, according to multiple sources. The arrested individuals are senior Malian employees working for the company.
Barrick, one of Mali’s largest gold producers, has faced increasing pressure from the Malian government since a military junta seized power in 2020. The government has been seeking to increase its control over the mining sector, including through a new mining code that allows for greater state ownership of gold concessions.
A government official confirmed the arrests, citing allegations of financial crimes. Barrick declined to comment on the matter, and Malian authorities were not immediately available for comment.
The arrests come amid broader tensions between Mali and Western countries. The junta has severed ties with former allies such as France and has sought closer relations with Russia. Last year, Mali signed agreements with Russia to build a gold refinery and explore for minerals.
