Mali financial union extends strike

A financial workers’ union in Mali, SYNABEF, has extended its strike until their secretary-general, Hamadoun Bah, is released from detention.

The strike, initially from Thursday to Saturday, will now continue from June 9, 2024, according to a new statement from the union.

Bah was arrested on Wednesday following a complaint accusing him of document forgery related to an internal union matter.

Separately, the Synergy of Action for Mali coalition has called for protests against rising living costs and electricity cuts.

Mali has been under military rule since a 2020 coup, with increasing tensions over delayed elections and restrictions on political activities.
