Malian firm NDC Energie takes over former TotalEnergies stations

Malian energy firm NDC Energie has acquired around 80 fuel service stations formerly operated by TotalEnergies, completing the French group’s exit from Mali after more than 25 years in the country.

The stations were first sold in January 2025 to Coly Energy Mali, a subsidiary of Benin Petro, marking the end of TotalEnergies’ direct presence in Mali’s retail fuel market. Ownership of the network changed again in January 2026, when NDC Energie took full control, the company confirmed on Wednesday.

The acquisition represents a major strategic shift for NDC Energie, formally known as Niangadou Distribution Company and led by businessman Mamadou Niangadou. Previously focused on fuel importation and transport, with a fleet of about 200 tanker trucks, the company will now operate across the full value chain, including importation, storage and retail distribution.

TotalEnergies has attributed its withdrawal to mounting fiscal pressures, repeated social disputes and strained relations with Mali’s military-led authorities since the 2020–2021 coups. The company has said it opted to leave rather than remain exposed to what it described as a high-risk and increasingly unprofitable operating environment.

The Mali exit followed a similar move in neighbouring Burkina Faso in 2025, where TotalEnergies sold roughly 170 service stations to Coris Investment Group, part of a broader retreat from volatile Sahel markets.
