Morocco seeks billions for rail expansion

Morocco’s state-owned rail operator, ONCF, is actively seeking $8.8 billion in funding to fuel its ambitious expansion plans.

The goal is to extend the country’s high-speed rail network to Marrakech and eventually to Agadir, further enhancing connectivity and boosting economic growth.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has expressed strong support for the project, with its President, Akinwumi Adesina, indicating that investors are eager to contribute to the initiative.

The bank has secured over $13 billion in funding offers for various African development projects, including ONCF’s expansion plan.

Morocco’s investment in its rail infrastructure reflects its commitment to sustainable transportation and economic development.

By expanding its high-speed rail network, the country aims to reduce reliance on road transport, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the overall travel experience for both domestic and international travelers.
