Niger signs deal with Starlink for internet

Niger has signed a deal with SpaceX’s Starlink to bring high-speed internet access to the entire nation. The agreement, signed on Tuesday, aims to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure and security.

Sidi Mohamed Raliou, the Minister of Communication, Posts, and Digital Economy, announced the partnership, highlighting the potential benefits for various sectors, including education, business, healthcare, and agriculture.

Starlink’s satellite network will provide high-speed internet connectivity to even the most remote areas of Niger, overcoming the challenges posed by traditional infrastructure.

However, the government has acknowledged the potential misuse of the technology by armed groups. To mitigate this risk, Niger will implement enhanced security measures to monitor and control access to Starlink’s services.

This development comes as neighboring Mali recently lifted its ban on Starlink, recognizing the service’s potential to improve connectivity and economic growth.
