TotalEnergies backs Mozambique’s $20b LNG project

Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo met with TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne on Monday to discuss critical energy projects. The talks, held during an energy summit in Tanzania, focused on a range of initiatives, including a long-awaited $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) development.

The Mozambique LNG project, initially expected to resume construction by late 2024, faces delays. Pouyanne confirmed that force majeure conditions are still in effect, pushing the project’s timeline further.

President Chapo emphasized the significance of the LNG project for Mozambique’s economic future, particularly after months of post-election unrest. The country’s government is working to ensure security and stability for its successful implementation.

TotalEnergies remains committed to the resumption of the LNG project, which has been suspended since 2021 due to regional security challenges.

In addition to LNG, the leaders discussed several gas-to-power projects aimed at benefiting local communities. Pouyanne highlighted the need for additional infrastructure to ensure these initiatives succeed.

Another key topic was the $5 billion hydropower project being developed by TotalEnergies, EDF, and Sumitomo. Pouyanne pointed out that the project cannot proceed without the construction of essential transmission lines. He stressed that private investors would require clear plans for infrastructure before committing significant capital.
