TotalEnergies stresses security concerns for Mozambique LNG

TotalEnergies has reiterated that the resumption of its massive gas project in Mozambique is contingent on the restoration of peace and security in the Cabo Delgado region.

The French energy giant was responding to a Financial Times report that suggested a further delay in the project’s restart due to ongoing security and political risks.

TotalEnergies emphasized that the priority remains the restoration of peace and security in the region.

The company had previously set a goal to begin gas production by 2029, contingent on resuming work on the project by the end of 2024. However, the recent political instability in Mozambique, including the disputed presidential election and ongoing security challenges, may further delay these plans.

The $20 billion Mozambique LNG project, in which TotalEnergies holds a 26.5% stake, aims to export liquefied natural gas to Asian markets.

However, the Cabo Delgado region has been grappling with a violent insurgency by militants, leading to significant security concerns.

The company has acknowledged the security challenges and has taken steps to address them, including working with Mozambican authorities to improve the training and human rights practices of security forces tasked with protecting the project site.

The future of the Mozambique LNG project remains uncertain, heavily reliant on the restoration of peace and stability in the region.
