Uganda’s coffee earnings soar on strong harvest, shipments

Uganda’s coffee export earnings and shipments surged in May, powered by a strong harvest in key regions.

The East African nation, Africa’s top coffee exporter, reaped $244 million in earnings last month, a 92% increase from a year earlier.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, shipments rose 44%, reaching 793,445 60-kg bags in May.

The ministry attributed this growth to an abundant main harvest in Uganda’s central and southwestern regions.

Robusta, Uganda’s primary coffee variety, underpinned this export boom, solidifying the crop’s role as a vital foreign exchange earner.

Higher production and elevated global prices encouraged farmers and traders to release larger volumes to the market in recent months.

Uganda’s coffee sector continues to thrive, driven by fertile lands, favourable weather, and growing global demand.

As the country cements its dominance in African coffee exports, eyes remain on the next harvest to sustain this momentum.
