Theatre enthusiasts in Algeria have much to celebrate this December, as the 16th National Festival of Professional Theatre (FNTP) prepares to take center stage from December 22nd to 31st.
This year’s festival, dedicated to the legendary Algerian playwright Sid Ahmed Agoumi, boasts an impressive lineup of 13 captivating plays vying for the coveted jury awards. The competition will unfold primarily at the prestigious Mahieddine-Bachtarzi National Theatre (TNA), kicking off with “Ichou,” a powerful production by the Biskra Regional Theatre.
Festival Commissioner Mohamed Yahiaoui, speaking at a press conference, shed light on the meticulous selection process. He revealed that the jury, faced with 16 submissions, ultimately chose 13 plays showcasing exceptional artistic merit and thematic diversity.
Audiences can expect to be enthralled by original creations like “Istirahet el mouharidjine” (The intermission of the clowns) by the Constantine Regional Theatre, “El Mouhtached” (The camps) from Souk Ahras, and “Taht El hissar” (Under the headquarters) by the Skikda troupe. These compelling narratives, set against the backdrop of Algeria’s 60th anniversary of independence, promise to provoke emotions and ignite meaningful reflection.
Regional theatres from across the country will also grace the festival stage with established classics like “The land of madness,” “Chique d’origine,” and “A day before the last judgment.” Audiences can look forward to diverse offerings ranging from “Sefar” and “Africa” to poignant historical dramas like “Revolution” and the ever-popular “The Barber of Seville.”
Yahiaoui emphasized the festival’s commitment to artistic excellence, highlighting the caliber of the jury led by renowned actress Fadila Hachemaoui. He also acknowledged concerns about ticket prices, hinting at a potential reduction from last year’s 500 DA to ensure accessibility for families.
The festival extends beyond the competitive arena, offering “out-of-competition” shows at the Théâtre communal d’Alger-centre. Enriching workshops, conferences, and discussions on theatre criticism, staging, and direction will further engage audiences and foster dialogue within the artistic community.
Adding a special touch to the festivities, the FNTP will pay tribute to the late actor Ali Sellali, affectionately known as Allalou. Eminent academic and theatre critic Ahmed Cheniki will lead a special discussion honoring Sellali’s enduring legacy.
The 16th FNTP promises a vibrant celebration of Algerian theatre, offering a platform for discovery, reflection, and appreciation of the nation’s rich cultural tapestry. From captivating on-stage performances to insightful discussions and heartfelt tributes, this December gathering is sure to captivate theatre lovers and ignite a renewed passion for the art form.
