Metal detecting in Morocco is attracting enthusiasts who search Atlantic beaches for lost coins, jewellery and historical objects. For many, the excitement comes from discovering something unexpected rather than making money.
Along the beaches of Agadir and Taghazout, hobbyists use metal detectors to explore the sand. Their discoveries range from ordinary coins to jewellery and objects with historical significance.
According to Al Jazeera, the hobby is becoming a regular activity for enthusiasts who enjoy exploration and learning about the past.
Metal Detecting in Morocco Uncovers Old Coins
Mustapha Harmouch, a 33-year-old content creator, has spent around four years searching Morocco’s beaches with a metal detector.
His discoveries include foreign currency, jewellery and old Moroccan coins.
In Sidi Ouassay, approximately 65 kilometres south of Agadir, Harmouch said he discovered 14 traditional Moroccan coins known as falus.
He also found a small gold ring on Taghazout beach.
However, Harmouch says the hobby is mainly about curiosity and discovery. He also tries to return valuable lost items to their owners.
Morocco’s Metal Detecting Laws
Metal detecting in Morocco is subject to legal restrictions, particularly when historical objects or archaeological sites are involved.
Under Morocco’s Law 22-80, archaeological searches require official authorisation. Accidental discoveries of historical objects must also be reported to authorities.
Experts warn that removing ancient objects without proper documentation can damage valuable archaeological evidence.
Harmouch says he avoids protected heritage sites and private property.
Metal Detecting Helps Keep Beaches Clean
Beyond searching for valuable objects, metal detecting in Morocco can also help remove dangerous waste from beaches.
Jalal Zegnoune, an enthusiast from Casablanca, regularly discovers discarded fishing equipment, nails and metal fragments.
He removes these objects to help protect beach visitors.
Other hobbyists say the activity provides an opportunity to explore nature, meet fellow enthusiasts and discover unexpected objects.
A Growing Interest in Beach Exploration
For Morocco’s metal-detecting enthusiasts, every outing offers the possibility of finding something different.
Whether discovering old coins, recovering lost jewellery or removing hazardous metal, the hobby combines curiosity, exploration and environmental awareness.
While historical discoveries remain subject to legal restrictions, enthusiasts continue to explore Morocco’s beaches for the excitement of what might be hidden beneath the sand.
