But in southwestern Morocco, goats really do climb argan trees.
The unusual sight has become one of the country’s most recognisable images.
So why are the goats up there?
Why Morocco’s goats climb trees
The answer is surprisingly simple: food.
Argan trees produce fruit that goats are attracted to. They also feed on leaves and other vegetation around the trees.
In the dry landscapes where argan trees grow, food can be limited.
Goats are agile climbers, allowing them to reach food several metres above the ground.
The famous argan trees
The argan tree is native mainly to southwestern Morocco and is well adapted to the region’s dry conditions.
Its fruit contains kernels used to produce argan oil.
The oil has become one of Morocco’s best-known products and is widely used in food and cosmetics.
Argan trees are also important to local communities and the surrounding environment.
Are the viral goat photos real?
Yes — goats really can and do climb argan trees.
However, there is an important catch.
Researchers and travel observers have reported that some tourist attractions may encourage or place goats in trees so visitors can take photographs.
That means not every viral image necessarily shows goats that climbed the tree naturally.
The underlying behaviour itself, however, is real.
How high can the goats climb?
Moroccan goats can climb surprisingly high into the branches.
Their balance and agility allow them to move across branches that can look far too narrow for an animal of their size.
Groups of goats can sometimes occupy different parts of the same tree.
From a distance, it can look as though the tree is growing goats instead of fruit.
It is one of Morocco’s most unusual rural sights — and one that, despite how strange it looks, has a very simple explanation.
