Sony unveils slimmed-down PlayStation 5 for holiday season

Sony has launched its new model PlayStation 5 (PS5) console in Japan, which is physically smaller and has a higher memory capacity.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, stores in Japan have started selling the new model consoles released under the name “PS5 Slim”.

The model without disk drive is priced at 59,980 yen ($395) and the model with ultra HD Blu-Ray disk drive is priced at 66,980 yen ($442).

The memory capacity of the new model PlayStation 5 has been increased to 1 terabyte, which is approximately 30 percent smaller compared to the first model released in November 2020.

In addition, compared to the weight of the first models, the “PS5 Slim” is 18 percent lighter in the model with disk drive and 24 percent lighter in the model without disk drive.

The Japanese company, which plans to stop the sale of older model PlayStation 5s as current stocks run out, will start overseas sales of the “PS5 Slim” later this month.
