A bus carrying college students home from Galala University in Egypt’s eastern Suez governorate overturned on a highway Monday, killing 12 people and injuring 33.
The health ministry confirmed the fatalities and injuries in a statement.
State-owned newspaper Akhbar al-Youm reported that no other vehicle was involved in the accident. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash, including the bus’s speed and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The injured were transported to a nearby hospital, and 19 of them were discharged by Monday evening.
Road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Egypt, where drivers often disregard traffic regulations and many roads are in a state of disrepair.
Despite the government’s focus on infrastructure projects, which has resulted in the construction of thousands of kilometers of highways and overpasses in the past decade, the Galala road where the accident took place is one of them.
Official statistics indicate that over 5,600 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2023 in Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous country.
