In a critical meeting in Cairo, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to address ongoing regional security concerns.
The two officials focused on the latest developments in Gaza and Sudan, seeking pathways to lasting peace and stability.
The discussion centered on the recently brokered Gaza ceasefire, which was initiated on January 19, halting the devastating conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Lammy praised Egypt’s pivotal role in mediating the truce, highlighting the importance of regional efforts to build sustainable peace.
“Just days into the Gaza ceasefire, we discussed regional security and finding a pathway to sustainable peace, as well as the crisis in Sudan,” Lammy shared on social media.
This comes as the ceasefire is seen as a critical step toward ending the devastating violence that has claimed the lives of over 47,000 Palestinians since October 2023.
The ceasefire agreement is a three-phase deal that includes a prisoner exchange, ongoing calm, and hopes for a permanent truce.
Despite this, Gaza remains in ruins, with residents facing displacement, hunger, and disease due to the extensive Israeli onslaught.
Alongside the Gaza crisis, the two officials discussed the ongoing conflict in Sudan, where the war between the Rapid Support Forces and the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan controlled SAF has caused widespread destruction since April 2023.
Thousands of civilians have lost their lives as both factions accuse each other of war crimes, including targeting residential areas.
