Egypt urges Gaza rebuilding while keeping Palestinians in place

Egypt has urged for the swift reconstruction of Gaza while emphasizing that Palestinians should not be displaced from their homeland.

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty made the call during a meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa in Cairo on Wednesday.

His statement followed a controversial proposal from former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that the United States take control of Gaza and resettle its residents elsewhere.

Trump previously advocated for Palestinians to be relocated to Egypt and Jordan, an idea both countries have firmly rejected.

Egypt’s foreign ministry did not directly mention Trump’s plan but reaffirmed its stance against any forced displacement of Palestinians.

Abdelatty and Mustafa agreed on the need to accelerate reconstruction efforts while ensuring Palestinians remain in Gaza.

At a White House press conference, Trump claimed he had backing from Middle Eastern leaders for his proposal, though he provided no details.

Egypt and Jordan, both key U.S. allies, have dismissed the plan and instead called for a two-state solution to the conflict.

Abdelatty stressed the importance of strengthening the Palestinian Authority (PA) and restoring its governance in Gaza.

Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in 2007, is not part of the PA, which holds only partial authority in the West Bank.
