First Iranian foreign minister visits Cairo in over a decade

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s top diplomat, arrived in Cairo on Wednesday. This visit marks the first time an Iranian foreign minister has traveled to Egypt since January 2013.

Araghchi’s visit comes after his trip to Jordan earlier this week. In Jordan, he met with Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss regional developments. Their discussions addressed Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and Lebanon, according to spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei.

While in Jordan, Araghchi also held talks with King Abdullah II. These conversations focused on rising tensions in the region and ways to prevent escalation. His tour aims to ease these tensions and address ongoing conflicts.

Over the past week, Araghchi visited several countries, including Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. His itinerary also included stops in Qatar, Iraq, and Oman before arriving in Egypt. Following his visit to Cairo, he is expected to travel to Turkey for further discussions.

On Tuesday, Araghchi engaged in diplomatic talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. He also met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

These diplomatic efforts come as the region prepares for Israel’s response to a recent missile attack. Iran claims this missile strike was retaliation for the killing of allied group leaders. The situation highlights the fragile state of diplomacy in the Middle East.
