Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday. The meeting took place during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
Both leaders exchanged views on escalating regional developments, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency. Sisi stressed the importance of reducing tensions in the area.
He warned that continued conflict could lead to severe confrontations affecting regional security and stability. Sisi highlighted Egypt’s ongoing efforts to promote de-escalation and achieve cease-fires in Gaza and Lebanon.
This meeting marked the first discussion between Sisi and Pezeshkian since the latter took office last July.
Iran remains on high alert following an Israeli military response to a recent missile attack. Tensions have intensified due to Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, which has reportedly killed nearly 42,800 people, mostly civilians.
The conflict has also spread to Lebanon, resulting in at least 2,546 deaths and over 11,860 injuries since October last year. Israel expanded its operations in the region by launching a ground assault into southern Lebanon on October 1.
