The Constitutional Court in the Democratic Republic of Congo Tuesday validated the results of presidential polls held in December, confirming the reelection of President Felix Tshisekedi for a second term. Tshisekedi won 73.47% of the votes cast, beating about 20 candidates, according to the final results of the Independent National Electoral Commission. Businessman Moise Katumbi, who served as governor of Katanga province maintained his second position, followed by Martin Fayulu who had emerged second in the 2018 presidential elections. The results were validated a day after the court started hearing a petition filed by one of the candidates seeking annulment of the results of the Dec. 20 presidential election. Tshisekedi, 60, took office in 2019 and is expected to be sworn in on Jan. 20 for a second five-year term to lead sub-Saharan Africa’s largest country.
