In Nigeria, operations against terrorist groups Boko Haram and ISWAP (the West African branch of ISIS) resulted in the neutralization of 140 individuals over the course of one week. Edward Buba, the Director of Media Operations for the Nigerian Defense Ministry, provided this information at a weekly press briefing, highlighting the country’s ongoing battle against escalating security challenges. Buba stated that the operations took place across various regions, leading to the deaths of 140 terrorists and gang members, while 135 were captured. Additionally, 76 individuals held for ransom were rescued. Nigeria has long faced threats from armed gangs, as well as attacks from Boko Haram and ISWAP, despite the death penalty for kidnapping crimes. Armed groups typically target villages, schools, and travelers in the northern parts of the country to demand ransoms.

 Fifteen members of the Boko Haram terrorist group surrendered to the Nigerian army on Sunday, the West African nation’s military announced. A statement from the Nigerian army said it conducted an operation in the Aguata region of northeastern Borno State against Boko Haram. The statement indicated that 15 members of the group surrendered during the operation and that their camp was destroyed. Boko Haram, which has been active since the early 2000s, has carried out mass violence since 2009, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Since 2015, the group has also conducted attacks in neighboring countries Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.

 Eleven people were killed Wednesday in an armed attack on a mining site in Nigeria’s Zamfara state Gunmen on motorcycles attacked the site in the Anka area, according to local media reports. Several people were also wounded in the attack. Nigeria has long faced attacks from armed gangs as well as terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, the West African branch of the Daesh/ISIS, in various parts of the country. Despite a mandatory death penalty for kidnapping in Nigeria, abductions for ransom are common.  The mass trial of 300 captured members of the Boko Haram terrorist group has begun in Nigeria. Michael Abu, Director of Strategic Communications and Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Center, shared updates on the judicial process Wednesday. Abu confirmed that the trial adheres to international criminal justice standards and is being overseen by the Federal High Court of Nigeria. He highlighted that five judges are presiding over the trial to ensure swift justice for the 300 defendants. The Nigerian government previously announced plans to prosecute 5,000 Boko Haram members captured in the country’s northeastern region. The terrorists are being tried in groups at the federal court. Since 2009, Boko Haram has been responsible for mass terror attacks in Nigeria, resulting in over 20,000 deaths. The group has extended its attacks to neighboring countries Cameroon, Chad and Niger since 2015, leading to at least 2,000 more deaths in the Lake Chad Basin area. Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians are displaced annually due to terror attacks and ongoing conflicts.
