Egypt defeats Spain to advance

In a stunning upset that sent shockwaves through the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Egypt defeated Spain 2-1 on Tuesday, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Ibrahim Adel emerged as the hero for the Egyptian team, netting both goals in the Group C match held at the Bordeaux Stadium. Spain managed a late consolation goal through Samu Omorodion in the 90th minute, but it proved too little too late.

With this victory, Egypt topped Group C with seven points and will now face the runner-up of Group D in the quarterfinals. Spain, despite the loss, had already secured their spot in the knockout stage due to their previous wins and will face the Group D winners.

The Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan, the other two teams in Group C, have been eliminated from the competition.

Meanwhile, in Group D, Japan has clinched a quarterfinal berth following two victories. Paraguay sits in second place with three points, while Mali and Israel are both on one point each heading into their final group stage match. Israel will face Japan on Tuesday evening.

In addition to Egypt and Spain, Argentina and Morocco have already secured their places in the last eight of the men’s football tournament.
