Miss South Africa contestant wins miss universe Nigeria

A former Miss South Africa contestant who faced intense backlash over her nationality has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria.

Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old born to a Nigerian father in South Africa, withdrew from the South African competition earlier this year due to xenophobic attacks and threats against her and her family.

Despite the controversy, Adetshina was invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant. Her win has been celebrated as a triumph over adversity and a testament to her resilience. “This journey has been a tough one, but I’m so proud of myself and grateful for the support,” she said.

The nationality row sparked heated debates in both South Africa and Nigeria. Some questioned Adetshina’s eligibility to represent South Africa, while others defended her right to do so. The controversy highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by foreign nationals in many countries.

Adetshina’s victory has been seen as a symbol of unity and hope. First runner-up Paula Ezendu emphasized the importance of rejecting xenophobia and tribalism. “We’re all one family,” she said. “We’re all human beings.”

As Miss Universe Nigeria, Adetshina will represent her country at the international Miss Universe competition in November. She is determined to make Nigeria proud and bring home the coveted crown.
