Azerbaijan officially seeks BRICS membership

Azerbaijan has officially expressed its desire to join the BRICS bloc of emerging economies, according to a statement from the country’s Foreign Ministry.

The announcement comes on the heels of recent joint declarations with China and Russia, both of which expressed support for Azerbaijan’s membership bid.

BRICS, which was founded in 2006, initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

In January of this year, the bloc expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Azerbaijan’s potential membership would further solidify the bloc’s global influence.

The decision to pursue BRICS membership aligns with Azerbaijan’s strategic goals and its growing economic ties with other emerging powers.

As a member of BRICS, Azerbaijan could benefit from increased trade, investment, and cooperation in various sectors.
