Cairo, Abu Dhabi call for Gaza truce, aid

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Wednesday called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

President Sisi arrived in Abu Dhabi early Wednesday to hold talks with his Emirati counterpart on regional crises and bilateral cooperation.

The two leaders emphasised the urgent need to halt hostilities in Gaza and to initiate the exchange of hostages and detainees.

They also underscored the vital importance of unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza, warning of a deepening catastrophe for its 2.4 million residents.

Since March 2, Israel has sealed all border crossings, blocking essential food, fuel, and medical supplies from entering the besieged enclave.

Sisi and Sheikh Mohammed renewed their commitment to the two-state solution, calling it the only path to lasting peace in the region.

The meeting also explored ways to deepen economic, trade, and investment ties between Cairo and Abu Dhabi to serve mutual aspirations.

After concluding his visit, President Sisi departed the Gulf country, according to the Emirati state news agency WAM.

Since October 2023, Israel has continued its military campaign in Gaza, defying global calls for a ceasefire and killing more than 54,600 Palestinians.

Most of the victims have been women and children, according to Palestinian health authorities, amid widespread destruction and displacement.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ex-Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its conduct in Gaza, drawing sharp international scrutiny.

Calls for accountability are growing as world leaders increasingly demand an end to the bloodshed and access for humanitarian aid.
