Central American troops strengthen Haiti peace mission

Approximately 150 military police officers from Central America have arrived in Haiti to bolster the ongoing efforts to combat the escalating violence perpetrated by powerful gangs.

The deployment, which includes personnel from Guatemala and El Salvador, is aimed at assisting the embattled Haitian government in restoring order.

The arrival of these troops was met with optimism by the Kenyan commander of the UN-backed mission, who emphasized the determination to dismantle the gangs and ensure the safety of the Haitian people.

The deployment comes amidst a surge in gang violence, including attacks on critical infrastructure such as hospitals and the international airport.

The recent Christmas Eve attack, which resulted in the tragic deaths of journalists and a police officer, highlighted the urgent need for increased security measures.

This international effort to quell the violence is led by Kenyan security officers, with support from other nations including Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, and Chad.
