A new US passport design featuring Donald Trump will be issued, marking a sharp departure from long-standing government traditions.
Officials said the initiative coincides with celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence in July.
The US State Department confirmed plans to release a limited-edition passport series commemorating the historic milestone.
Images circulating in media reports show Trump’s official portrait superimposed over the Declaration, with his signature embossed in gold beneath.
A second illustration included in the design depicts a historic painting of the Founding Fathers, reinforcing the anniversary’s symbolic weight.
Officials said the special passports would be available only in Washington, distributed in limited numbers while supplies last, without additional fees.
It remains unclear whether applicants will be able to opt out of receiving the commemorative design when applying for passports.
The move challenges global norms, where passports typically display national symbols, historical landmarks, or cultural imagery rather than contemporary political leaders.
Current US passports feature scenes such as the Apollo moon landing and landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, reflecting shared national heritage.
Since returning to office, Trump has increasingly placed his name and image across public institutions, signalling a more personalised approach to governance.
Government buildings in Washington have displayed banners bearing his likeness, while his name has been added to cultural and institutional sites.
The US Treasury Department also announced plans to include Trump’s signature on US currency, another break from precedent.
In contrast, countries such as the United Kingdom feature monarchs like King Charles III on currency, reflecting ceremonial rather than political roles.
