Egypt declared Saturday its readiness to support US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the Israeli war in Gaza. Speaking at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty thanked Trump for his dedication to regional diplomacy.
“Egypt is fully committed to building on President Trump’s vision to restore stability, end the war, and pave the way for a Palestinian state,” he said. Abdelatty also emphasized Egypt’s support for the release of hostages and detainees as part of the broader political framework proposed by Washington.
The Trump administration has outlined a 21-point plan aiming to end hostilities and resume stalled diplomacy between Israel and Arab nations. Key measures include a permanent ceasefire, release of hostages, Gaza governance without Hamas, and a phased Israeli withdrawal, sources familiar with the plan said.
Arab leaders broadly endorsed the proposals but requested guarantees on West Bank annexation, Jerusalem’s status, expanded humanitarian aid, and settlement regulation, diplomats told CNN. The peace effort gained momentum after an Israeli strike in Doha disrupted earlier indirect talks with Hamas, prompting Qatar to offer continued mediation.
Israel’s bombardment since October 2023 has killed nearly 66,000 Palestinians, largely women and children, leaving Gaza uninhabitable and plagued by starvation and disease. The escalating humanitarian crisis underscores the urgency for a political solution, with Egypt positioning itself as a central mediator alongside US and regional partners.
