Flash floods, landslides in Indonesia leave destruction, loss

At least 17 people have lost their lives and eight remain missing after torrential rains triggered landslides and flash floods in Central Java, Indonesia.

The disaster struck on Monday, with rivers overflowing and mudslides engulfing several villages in Pekalongan regency.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by difficult terrain and inclement weather.

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency reported that flash floods swept away villagers and vehicles, while landslides buried homes and damaged infrastructure, including two main bridges.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges posed by natural disasters in Indonesia, a country prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather events due to its geographical location.

This incident comes on the heels of other recent natural disasters in Indonesia, including landslides and floods in West Sumatra and North Sumatra provinces, which resulted in significant loss of life.
