The German military on Friday concluded its withdrawal from an airbase in Niger, marking the end of its operations in the restive Sahel nation.
The decision followed the breakdown of negotiations to extend the base’s agreement with the junta-run government.
In May, Germany and Niger reached an interim agreement allowing the German military to continue operating its airbase in Niamey until the end of August.
However, disagreements over immunity for German personnel led to the collapse of talks to extend the agreement.
Senior military officials from both countries announced the completion of the withdrawal, stating that while this marks the end of the airbase operations, military cooperation between Niger and Germany will continue.
Five cargo planes carrying German troops and equipment landed at a German airbase on Friday afternoon, bringing an end to Germany’s presence in Niger.
The base, which once housed thousands of German personnel, had been operational since 2016.
