Global leaders urge end to landmine production and use

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, Pope Francis, and others have called for a global ban on landmine production and use, highlighting their growing deployment despite the 1997 Ottawa Convention. Speaking at a conference in Cambodia, Guterres emphasized that a landmine-free world is achievable, urging nations to honor their commitments.

Pope Francis, through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, condemned landmines for causing prolonged civilian suffering, particularly among children. While 164 countries have joined the treaty, major producers like the U.S., China, and Russia remain non-signatories.

Landmine Monitor reported extensive mine use in conflict zones like Ukraine and Myanmar, with over 5,700 casualties in 2023 alone, a third of them children. Cambodia, once heavily mine-affected, was praised for its demining efforts, clearing over 200 square kilometers in 2023. Prime Minister Hun Manet urged more nations to join the treaty, showcasing Cambodia’s progress as a global example.
