Hamas wants US guarantee on Gaza ceasefire, sources say

Per two Egyptian security sources, Hamas seeks written assurances from the United States for a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza before endorsing a U.S.-supported truce plan.

Hamas response to the phased ceasefire, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, was revealed on Tuesday without specifics.

The plan, presented by President Biden in late May, outlines steps including hostage release, Israeli troop reduction, Palestinian prisoner release, Gaza reconstruction, and deceased hostage repatriation.

Despite U.S. claims of Israeli acceptance, Hamas expresses concerns about transitioning between phases, emphasizing the need for guarantees.

Hamas insists on these assurances, with Egypt conveying their demand to the U.S.

Though Hamas’ positive response indicates progress, an Israeli official notes significant changes, potentially rejecting Biden’s hostage release terms.

Hamas proposes a revised timeline, encompassing Rafah, for a permanent ceasefire and Israeli troop withdrawal.

The Gaza conflict, initiated by Hamas’ October attack on Israel, continues to prompt mediation by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, given its toll in casualties and hostages.
