Three Kenyan soldiers were killed and others wounded on Tuesday when their patrol hit an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road between Sankuri and Kiunga, a coastal town about 12 km from the Somali border, the Kenya Defence Forces said.
In a statement, the military lamented, “Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries. These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
The al Qaeda‑linked Islamist group al Shabaab reported on its website that at least two Kenyan troops were killed and several injured in a blast targeting a convoy in the same region, though it did not explicitly claim responsibility.
Al Shabaab, which controls large areas of southern and central Somalia, frequently carries out cross‑border attacks on both military and civilian targets. Security analysts say the group aims to pressure Kenya into withdrawing its troops from the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
