Iranian and Omani ministers meet ahead of nuclear talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Monday in Geneva with Omani counterpart Badr Albusaidi ahead of indirect nuclear talks.

The meeting focused on finalising coordination before the second round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington, scheduled to start Tuesday morning.

Under Omani mediation, the talks will be hosted at the Embassy of Oman in Geneva, marking a delicate step in diplomacy.

Iran and the US resumed indirect nuclear diplomacy in Muscat on February 6, nearly eight months after a war-triggering Israeli attack.

Both sides expressed cautious optimism after the previous round, despite heightened tensions caused by a US military buildup in the Persian Gulf.

Uranium enrichment remains a core dispute, with Iran demanding sanctions relief in return for limiting its nuclear activities.

Washington has insisted Iran fully halt enrichment and transfer its highly enriched uranium stockpile abroad, maintaining strict security conditions.

The US also seeks to expand negotiations to include Iran’s missile program and support for armed regional groups, a proposal Tehran rejects.

Iran has repeatedly stated it will negotiate solely on its nuclear program, underscoring a narrow but vital diplomatic focus.

The Geneva talks arrive amid broader regional unease, where careful diplomacy faces the shadow of potential escalation and fragile trust.
