Iran’s Pezeshkian accuses global bodies of failing to stop Israel

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused international institutions of failing to stop Israeli actions, saying global bodies remained silent despite what he described as open threats of assassinations.

Speaking at a memorial conference in Tehran’s Summit Hall for slain former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Pezeshkian said international organisations and human rights advocates had failed to prevent such actions.

He claimed political and logistical support had instead enabled Israel, accusing it of attacking several regional countries and fuelling instability across the Middle East.

Pezeshkian said Muslim nations had not initiated such aggression and urged greater unity as Iran entered what he described as a new leadership era.

He said the country’s leadership carried a heavy responsibility and pledged his government would pursue the revolution’s ideals while strengthening solidarity among Muslim nations.

His remarks came as funeral ceremonies for Khamenei began in Tehran, where thousands of mourners gathered at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Mosque to pay their respects.

Khamenei was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February, sparking weeks of conflict before a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire in April and an interim agreement in June.

Memorial events will continue in Tehran throughout the weekend with heads of state, senior officials and religious figures expected to attend.

Public farewell ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, followed by the main funeral procession through Tehran on Monday.

The funeral rites will then move to Qom on 7 July before continuing to Iraq, including Baghdad, Najaf and Karbala, on 8 July.

The final burial ceremony is scheduled for 9 July at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of Shia Islam’s holiest sites.
