Israel displaces 250,000 Palestinians from Jabalia refugee camp

More than 250,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced from the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, Israeli media reported Friday.

The Hebrew news outlet Walla, citing unnamed security sources, said the evacuation forms part of the military’s “Gideon’s Chariots” operation.

Israeli forces aim to prevent Palestinian fighters from accessing underground and above-ground infrastructure by clearing key areas of civilians.

Although the precise location of these so-called “humanitarian zones” was not disclosed, Israel has previously designated coastal strips between Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah.

Despite their name, these areas have witnessed deadly strikes, killing hundreds of already displaced civilians in recent months.

The military campaign is expected to stretch over months, with plans for a full evacuation of combat zones and continued occupation of captured territories.

On May 22, Haaretz revealed Israel’s intention to take control of 75% of the Gaza Strip within two months.

Many fleeing Palestinians have sought refuge in western Gaza City, where Israeli bombardments have intensified and aid remains blocked.

The United Nations and aid groups warn of a looming famine for Gaza’s population of over two million, already suffering from extreme deprivation.

Since October 2023, more than 54,300 Palestinians — mostly women and children — have been killed in Israel’s military campaign, according to Gaza health authorities.

International legal bodies have responded, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leaders last November.

The International Court of Justice is also examining genocide charges against Israel for its actions in Gaza.

As the ground shakes and the skies darken over Gaza, the humanitarian toll continues to mount amid global scrutiny and rising despair.
