Israel proposes Gaza ceasefire, but hurdles remain

Egypt and Qatar have presented a new Israeli proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza to Hamas, according to Egyptian state-affiliated Al Qahera News TV. However, a senior Hamas official indicated that key elements of the proposal are unlikely to be accepted.

Hamas confirmed it was reviewing the proposal and would respond “as soon as possible.” The group reiterated its demand for a ceasefire that would end the war and require a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, told Reuters that the proposal did not meet their core demand for a complete halt of hostilities. He also rejected Israel’s call for the disarmament of Hamas, stating that surrendering their weapons was “non-negotiable.”

Israel did not immediately comment on the proposal.

The latest round of negotiations, which took place in Cairo, ended without a breakthrough. Hamas continues to insist that any ceasefire must include an Israeli commitment to end the war and withdraw its forces from Gaza. In contrast, Israel has made clear that it will not cease military operations until Hamas is defeated and all hostages are returned.

Since resuming its offensive in March, Israeli forces have killed over 1,500 Palestinians and displaced hundreds of thousands. Meanwhile, 59 Israeli hostages remain held by Hamas, with Israel believing that 24 of them are still alive.
