Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned against further regional escalation on Sunday during a meeting with the United States’ highest-ranking general, as cross-border hostilities between Israel and Lebanon intensified.
Sisi emphasized the dangers of a new front opening in Lebanon and stressed the necessity of preserving Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty, according to a statement from his office.
His meeting with US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles “CQ” Brown, came hours after Israel launched air strikes on Lebanon, claiming to pre-empt an attack from Hezbollah.
Egypt, a key mediator, urged restraint and de-escalation, while the US, Israel’s top arms provider, stated its military was “postured” to support its ally amid the tensions.
The visit coincided with planned talks in Cairo, attended by CIA chief William Burns, aimed at a truce in Gaza.
Sisi called for a decisive international stance and stronger response to joint efforts for a ceasefire and hostage-prisoner exchange.
