Israel urges diplomats to push for Houthi terrorist designation

Israel has instructed its diplomatic missions across Europe to advocate for the designation of Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebel group as a terrorist organization, citing escalating threats to global stability.

The Houthis have launched multiple drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, which they claim are acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. These strikes have disrupted key international shipping routes, forcing companies to adopt longer, costlier detours—intensifying concerns over global inflation.

“The Houthis endanger not only Israel but the region and the entire world,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said in a statement. “The first step is securing their classification as a terrorist organization.”

The Houthis are already designated as terrorists by the United States, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the UAE, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Israel, Sa’ar noted.

On Saturday, a missile fired from Yemen struck the Tel Aviv-Jaffa area, injuring 14 people after the Israeli military failed to intercept it.

This latest escalation underscores Israel’s push for broader international action against the group.
