King Charles and U.S. President Donald Trump toasted the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States at a state banquet on Wednesday, praising centuries of shared sacrifice, commerce and culture.
“Our people have fought and died together for the values we hold dear. We have innovated, traded and created together,” the King said, highlighting the ties that bind the two allies.
Trump called the alliance “priceless and eternal,” saying the two nations are joined by “history and fate,” and — in a flourish — “like two notes in one chord, or two verses of the same poem.” He said the U.S. and U.K. have done “more good for humanity than any in history.”
Charles also nodded to Trump’s Scottish ancestry and his fondness for golf, while stressing common diplomatic priorities from Ukraine to Gaza.
The banquet, heavy on royal pageantry, capped Trump’s second state visit to the U.K., an uncommon honor for a foreign leader.
