Mauritius waits until end July for Chagos Islands deal decision

Mauritius said it will wait until end of July for Britain to finalize Chagos Islands deal after US objections emerged.

A British delegation met Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam on Wednesday in first talks since UK paused agreement process deal.

Attorney General Gavin Glover said Mauritius has no visibility on whether US will approve deal moving forward ultimately at all.

He said Mauritius will wait until end of July before deciding next steps depending on UK developments further political outcomes.

US President Donald Trump previously called the deal a big mistake reversing earlier supportive remarks about agreement of the agreement.

The Diego Garcia base supports US-led operations including Yemen strikes Gaza aid missions and Afghanistan counterterror campaigns over recent years.

Iran fired two missiles at Diego Garcia last month according to media reports without hitting the base at all.
