Romania’s constitutional court has annulled the presidential election, citing Russian interference that allegedly bolstered far-right frontrunner Călin Georgescu.
The dramatic decision, announced Friday, comes just two days before the scheduled runoff, plunging the nation into political uncertainty. The court stated that the electoral process was compromised by “massive irregularities,” including cyberattacks and social media manipulation attributed to Russian actors.
Pro-EU President Klaus Iohannis, whose term was set to end, confirmed he would remain in office until a new election is organized. This decision awaits the formation of a government after last weekend’s parliamentary elections.
Georgescu, a controversial former civil servant, stunned observers by winning the first round on November 24. Critics fear his leadership could align Romania with Europe’s far-right bloc, threatening EU unity against Russia.
Documents declassified earlier this week revealed accusations of illegal digital campaigns favoring Georgescu, prompting the court to act decisively. The far-right candidate called the annulment a “coup d’état,” urging citizens to fight for democratic ideals.
Centrist mayor Elena Lasconi, his opponent in the runoff, decried the ruling as “immoral,” warning it undermines the essence of democracy.
Public opinion remains sharply divided. While some view the court’s decision as necessary to preserve democratic integrity, others see it as politically motivated. On Bucharest’s streets, reactions ranged from outrage to relief, reflecting deepening societal polarisation.
Political analysts warn the decision could destabilize the nation, which has strategic importance as an EU and NATO member bordering Ukraine. Anti-corruption prosecutors have already opened investigations into alleged electoral violations and money laundering.
With far-right parties gaining ground in recent legislative elections, Romania faces its most significant democratic test since the fall of Communism in 1989. The future of its institutions hangs precariously in the balance.
