At least six police officers were killed and four others injured in an attack on a police camp in Kenya’s Garissa County, near the border with Somalia, authorities said Sunday.
The assault, which took place at dawn, was carried out by suspected fighters from Somalia’s al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group, according to a police report shared with the media. The militants reportedly used a variety of weapons to overrun the camp, which housed police reservists.
“Six fatalities have been confirmed, with four others injured and receiving treatment,” the report stated.
Al Shabaab has frequently launched cross-border attacks in the region, targeting both security forces and civilians.
Last Tuesday, the U.S. embassy in Kenya issued a travel advisory, warning American citizens against visiting Garissa and other border counties due to the ongoing threat of terrorism.
The militant group has waged a long-running insurgency in Somalia, seeking to overthrow the central government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.
