U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a new 60-day ceasefire proposal aimed at halting Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza — and warned Hamas that rejecting the deal will bring “worse” consequences.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump announced that Israel has agreed to the terms of the temporary truce, and called on Hamas to sign on. “Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalise the 60-day CEASEFIRE,” he wrote. “During this time, we will work with all parties to end the war. But if Hamas refuses… IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”
The proposal marks a renewed push for de-escalation after a previous two-month truce collapsed in March, when Israel resumed its siege on Gaza amid a breakdown in political negotiations. That ceasefire — in place from January to early March — had paused fighting but failed to produce a path to a lasting resolution.
Continued violence on the ground
Despite diplomatic efforts, Israeli air and artillery strikes on Gaza have continued. According to Palestinian news agency Wafa, at least 32 Palestinians were killed since dawn, including 24 in Khan Younis alone. Six civilians were reported killed in shelling that struck tents in Al-Mawasi, a makeshift displacement zone near the coast, with another 10 people injured.
The proposed ceasefire would aim to stop the bloodshed temporarily while U.S. officials — along with regional mediators — work to reach a broader political settlement. Hamas has not yet formally responded to Trump’s offer.
